A Program For Inspiring The Young Female Leaders of Today

Indigo Girls Group is an organization run by young women for young women. Through workshops, conferences, and weekly after-school girls' clubs, Indigo Girls Group educates and engages elementary and high school girls in discussions about current topics facing girls today. IGG fosters a safe space for learning and analysis of topics such as self-care, anti-oppression, mental well-being, women in STEM, and much more. These subjects and methods of delivery promote personal growth, increased self-esteem, and mental and physical well-being.

Each IGG Kingston member has a different definition of what it means to be an Indigo Girl, and the organization emphasizes the diversity of these answers. For some members, it means to foster a safe environment to speak freely and honestly about themes prevalent in girls' lives. To another member, it means to be open and authentic about who you are as an individual. The consensus of all answers is to find power in your existence and use it to be an active change-maker in your community. Each club, workshop, and conference aims to empower each young girl and encourage her to use her passions for change and leave feeling confident, inspired, and determined. We hope creating a safe space for newfound knowledge inspires each girl to continue the positivity felt within Indigo Girls into their communities and future aspirations.

I feel very fortunate to be a part of this fantastic team of ladies that radiate positivity and feminism in their work for the organization and day-to-day life. In my first year at Queen's University, I was a girl's club leader at Sir John A. MacDonald Elementary School and had the privilege to interact with so many amazing young women. Each participant brought vibrant and youthful ideas to discussions on topics that affected them and exuded intelligence and resilience to handle any obstacle they may face. It was extremely rewarding to see the girls' club's skills implemented into conversing with each other and carrying themselves as confident growing women. After countless fashion shows, art projects, dance parties, and activities, what started as a group of girls from different classrooms became a little family that supported and leaned on one another. Not only did we girls club leaders foster the education of topics affecting girls, but the girls taught us to let our passions and creativeness drive our pursuit as agents of change.
